Lameness
workups
Horses
are normally admitted to the clinic the night before a lameness investigation
to allow them time to settle in to their new surroundings.
After
a thorough examination and gait analysis at walk trot and canter, local anaesthetic
is infiltrated into certain areas of the legs to determine the exact location
of the pain and therefore the lameness.
The
patient is then moved to radiography and utrasonography to examine that area in
more detail.
In
general soft tissue injuries are examined in more detail using ultrasound scans,
arthritic or bony changes are examined using radiography (x rays) through a combination
of the two provides a complete picture. Some horses are lame on more then one
leg which adds to the complexity of the lameness and is an exciting challenge
for us.
